Aortic homograft replacement of the Canine pulmonary artery

Abstract
Roentgenologcal, macroscopical. and histological study was carried out on pulmonary artery replacement
graft with homologous aortic graft sterilized and preserved in 10% formalin solution in 28 dogs.
Out of 28 grafted dogs, there were 7 acute death due to anesthesia accident and intraoperative hemorrhage. Three dogs died of distemper after operation in animal pen.
Most of the operative death were caused by bleeding because of laceration of the pulmonary artery during dissection.
After pulmonary arteriogaphy, one, two, three, and four months survivors were sacrificed to obtain
specimens.
The following observations were made in the long-term survivors.
(A) Pulmonary arteriogram;
Contrast media filled the pulmonary artery, showing patency of grafted segment. Several cases showed some stricture on the anastomasis sites.
(B) Macroscopic findings;
In one and two month specimens adventitial surface showed dense adhesion with the surrounding tissue and luminal surface showed loosely attached rough membrane. Anastomosis sutures were still exposed.
In three and four months specimens intimal surface was firm, smooth. and glistening, which could hardly be differentiated from host intima.
Anastomosis sites were completely covered by smooth membrane.
C. Histological findings;
In one to two month specimens, granuloma was noted along the anastomosis line. Intimal surface showed rather rough connective tissue covering where in some cases cartilagenous and osseous changes were
